Helicopter With Six on Board Goes Missing Near Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli; Search On Amid Heavy Rain, Dense Cloud

Chamoli (Uttarakhand): For the families of the six people on board, Friday has been a day of waiting and hoping for news. A helicopter on the Badrinath route has gone missing in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, with heavy rain and thick cloud covering the mountains, and a search is underway to find it.

Two other helicopters have been sent up to look for the missing aircraft, even as police and district teams search on the ground.

What we know right now

The helicopter is reported to have lost contact somewhere between Joshimath and Badrinath Dham. Six people, including the pilot, are said to have been on board. The weather at the time was poor, with heavy rain and dense cloud over the valley.

The district administration has said it fears the helicopter may have crashed. Chamoli District Magistrate Gaurav Kumar said that details, including the exact number of people on board, were not immediately available, and police officials confirmed they had received word of the missing aircraft and were gathering more information. Teams from the police and district administration have been out searching since the alert came in.

What we don’t know yet

In a situation like this, it is important to be clear about what is still uncertain. Reports so far do not agree on a few points, and none has been officially confirmed.

  • The direction of the flight. Some accounts say the helicopter was returning from Badrinath towards Dehradun, while others say it was flying from Phata to Badrinath.
  • The operator and aircraft. One report names the operator as Trans Bharat and gives the registration as VT-HCX. This has not been officially verified.
  • What happened to the aircraft. Some outlets are describing a crash, but the district administration has so far called the helicopter missing and feared it crashed.
  • Who was on board. The names and condition of the six people have not been made public. Authorities usually release names only after the families have been informed, and we will not guess.

We have not been able to confirm any casualty figures, and we are not reporting any until officials do.

Why the search is difficult

Anyone who has travelled in this part of Uttarakhand knows how quickly the weather can change. The stretch between Joshimath and Badrinath runs through narrow, steep valleys where cloud can settle in within minutes and hide the ridges. That makes flying risky, and it makes searching harder too. Search helicopters may be unable to go as low or as close as they would like, and ground teams may have to cover difficult, forested slopes on foot.

Rescuers are working under real pressure. Every hour matters in a search like this, and the weather is not helping.

A route with a worrying history

Helicopter flights are a lifeline for many pilgrims who visit the Char Dham shrines, especially older travellers and those short on time. But these routes have seen painful accidents. In May 2025, a helicopter heading to Gangotri crashed in Uttarkashi district, killing six people. A month later, in June 2025, a helicopter crashed near Kedarnath in poor visibility, killing all seven on board. After that, the Chief Minister ordered stricter rules for helicopter operations in the state.

Whether today’s disappearance is connected to the weather or to something else is not yet known, and it would be wrong to speculate before the aircraft is found and investigators have done their work.

What happens next

  1. Locating the helicopter. This is the priority, and the search will continue as long as conditions allow.

  2. Informing families. Authorities are expected to share names and details with families before making them public.
  3. Investigation. Aviation authorities, including the DGCA and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, typically look into such incidents.
  4. Review of operations. Officials may take a fresh look at weather clearances and safety procedures for helicopter flights in the hills.

This is a developing story. We will update it as confirmed information becomes available.
