India’s First Homegrown Pesticide Molecule Pioxaniliprole Approved for Rice, Chilli, Tomato and Chana

The insecticide was discovered and developed in India. It will reach farmers under the brand name Pioxazon.

New Delhi, October 29, 2026: India has approved Pioxaniliprole, an insecticide active ingredient that the country’s Registration Committee has recorded as the first ever discovered in India. Farmers growing rice, chilli, tomato, and chana (chickpea, also called Bengal gram) will be the first to get access once it is launched.

What has been approved

The Registration Committee under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare cleared the molecule at its 476th meeting on September 21, 2026. PI Industries Ltd received approval for two products:

  • Pioxaniliprole Technical: 97.5% w/w minimum purity
  • Pioxaniliprole 20% w/v SC: a suspension concentrate formulation for use in the field

The registration was granted under Section 9(3) of the Insecticides Act, 1968. The meeting was chaired by Agriculture Commissioner and Registration Committee Chairman Dr P. K. Singh.

Crops and pests covered

The 20% SC formulation is approved for four crops:

Crop Approved target pests
Rice Yellow stem borer, leaf folder
Chilli Fruit borer, tobacco caterpillar
Tomato Fruit borer
Chana (Bengal gram) Pod borer

Fall armyworm is also among the approved target pests.

These caterpillar pests cause significant yield losses in rice, vegetables, and pulses. Farmers manage them largely with a limited set of existing chemistries, which is why a new active ingredient is significant.

Why it matters for India

India has long been a major manufacturer of agrochemicals, but most active ingredients sold here were discovered elsewhere. Pioxaniliprole is different: it was discovered, developed, and tested in India through more than a decade of research. The approval fits the government’s stated aim of promoting domestic research and indigenous technologies for farmers.

The company says it will take the molecule to farmers in other countries next. The current registration covers the Indian market only.

When will farmers get it?

The product will be sold as Pioxazon, and the company has said it will launch in India soon. No launch date or price has been announced.

What farmers should keep in mind

  • Buy only from authorised dealers and read the label before use.
  • Use the recommended dose, crop, and pest only.
  • Observe the waiting period before harvest.
  • Rotate insecticide groups, since repeated use of one chemistry can lead to pest resistance.
  • Combine chemical control with integrated pest management practices.

Farmers can get crop-specific advice from their local Krishi Vigyan Kendra or state agriculture department.
