According to data released on Tuesday, the 2023 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, India, and the movies 'Jawan' and 'Pathan' starring Shahrukh Khan have emerged as the most popular articles on Wikipedia this year.
According to data released by the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that hosts Wikipedia, English Wikipedia has received an astounding 84 billion views this year alone. ChatGPT takes the lead with 49,490,406 page views among the most popular articles. Following closely in second place is Deaths in 2023 with 42,666,860 views. The 2023 Cricket World Cup secured the third spot with 38,171,653 views, while the Indian Premier League claimed the fourth position with 32,012,810 views. Lastly, the film Oppenheimer garnered significant attention with 28,348,248 views.
The organization revealed the list of Wikipedia's 25 most popular articles of 2023, which featured topics related to India. Among them were the country's beloved cricket and Bollywood. Notable mentions included the Cricket World Cup, ranking at number 6 with 25,961,417 pageviews, the film 'Jawan' at the 8th spot with 21,791,126 pageviews, the 2023 Indian Premier League with 20,694,974 pageviews, and the Khan blockbuster 'Pathan' completing the top 10 with 19,932,509 pageviews.
India was also one of the most frequently searched topics on Wikipedia, receiving 13,850,178 page views and securing the 21st position on the list.
Since the Wikimedia Foundation began publishing year-end most popular articles lists in 2015, cricket articles have never reached the top, despite cricket being one of the most popular sports globally.
"Pathaan was released first in January 2023 and broke several box office records. Those accomplishments were short-lived, as Jawan surpassed them after its release in September. Both films featured Shah Rukh Khan as the main lead actor. Around their release dates, both films peaked at over one million views in a single day on English Wikipedia alone,” it further said
Taylor Swift, Matthew Perry from 'Friends', and Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, were also among the most-viewed articles on Wikipedia in 2023.
