Rumors are circulating that OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is working on a new web search tool that might take on major search engines like Google and Bing. A recent article claims that OpenAI is developing a search engine, most likely building on Microsoft's Bing search capabilities.
Although OpenAI has not formally announced these intentions, the business appears to be shifting towards a more contextual, conversational approach to search based on its attempts to increase ChatGPT's knowledge and web browsing capabilities. According to the article, ChatGPT might incorporate the new technology as a premium option for users who are willing to pay for it. It is still possible to release it as a stand-alone search product, though.
OpenAI building Google’s competitor
OpenAI's prospective use of Bing to power aspects of their rumored search solution is consistent with Microsoft's huge investment in the AI business in recent years. Microsoft has already integrated OpenAI's models into a number of its products, including Copilot and Bing web search. By combining the assets of the two businesses, OpenAI's search tool might adopt a knowledge-based strategy that outperforms conventional search engines that only pay attention to connections and keywords.
Though intriguing, it's yet uncertain if ChatGPT's inclusion of AI will entice people away from Google Search. Microsoft attempted to outperform Google with artificial intelligence (AI) search experiences in the past, but it hardly experienced any growth in market share.
OpenAI's technology presents intriguing new opportunities, but when it comes to fundamental utilities like web search, people tend to stick with what they know. News of OpenAI's goals, however, indicates that the days of conventional searching might be gradually coming to an end, despite any possible obstacles.
