About the AI Pin
Humane, a startup backed by Sam Altman, founded by former Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, is driven by a vision to create more humane technology. Boasting funding exceeding $100 million, the company has garnered support from notable investors like Sam Altman, Marc Benioff, and Lachlan Murdoch. They unveiled their inaugural product, the ‘AI Pin’ smart device, in July.
During a press briefing in November, Chaudhri expressed that the innovative wearable showcased the potential to surpass smartphones. He emphasized the belief that the previous era had reached a plateau and described the AI-powered wearable as introducing "a new way of thinking, a new sense of opportunity."
Humane unveiled its inaugural product, the Ai Pin, on November 10 through a video showcasing its features and capabilities.
Humane showcased the AI Pin's ability to select from various AI services for responding to user queries without necessitating screen interaction. However, the video highlighted a significant error in one of the AI-powered responses, prompting questions about the device's reliability.
Operating on an undisclosed Snapdragon chipset and presumed GPT-4 AI engine, the Ai Pin's press release acknowledges collaborations with OpenAI and Microsoft. The statement notes, "Humane's distinctive partnerships with Microsoft and OpenAI grant Ai Pin access to some of the most potent AI models and platforms globally, laying the groundwork for incorporating new capabilities as technology advances."
Characteristics and Functions of AI Pin
- The AI Pin, a compact device designed for clipping onto clothes or accessories, utilises voice, gesture, and touch inputs to provide access to diverse AI services like search, translation, navigation, voice-based messaging and email access.
- This wearable utilises AI technology, distinguishing itself with a displayless design that minimises user interaction time. Unlike traditional consumer tech, the Ai Pin relies on voice and laser ink technology to effectively convey information through an AI chatbot.
- It is equipped with a Snapdragon chipset. Diverging from traditional displays, it incorporates a projector capable of projecting information onto surfaces, like the user's hand.
- Equipped with various sensors, a camera, speaker, microphone, and a laser ink display, the Ai Pin functions as a quasi-smartphone with restricted functionality. Prioritizing privacy, the camera remains inactive unless explicitly activated, and the device does not respond to wake words.
For a detailed demonstration of the AI powered wearable, the company has shared an explanatory video on YouTube.
The Humane AI Pin is currently open for pre-orders on their website, with a starting price of $699. A mandatory $24 monthly subscription for cellular data and a phone number is required. The device is offered in three color choices: Eclipse (Black) for $699, Lunar (White with polished chrome) for $799, and Equinox (Black with polished chrome) also priced at $799.
