Google has revealed plans to manufacture its Pixel smartphones in India, with the Pixel 8 set to be the first model produced in the country. The move comes seven years after the launch of Google's first Pixel-branded smartphone.
The company aims to work with both local and foreign manufacturers to assemble the devices. Production is expected to begin in 2024, with the first units becoming available next year. Google's decision follows in the footsteps of rivals Samsung and Apple, who also manufacture smartphones in India.
However, it remains uncertain whether the move will result in lower pricing for the Pixel handsets. In addition to manufacturing, Google also announced plans to expand its service network across India, with the aim of providing support in more cities and locations.
The company currently operates 28 service centres in 27 cities through F1 Info Solutions. Senior VP for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh, described the move as an early step in expanding Google's device production capacity and meeting the growing demand for Pixel smartphones in India.
