Ex-Samsung Electronics Official Faces Arrest Warrant for Chip Tech Leak

A South Korean court has issued an arrest warrant for a former Samsung Electronics official accused of sharing semiconductor technology information with a Chinese chipmaker as Seoul intensifies efforts against industrial espionage.

The warrant was issued by a judge on Friday, according to a statement from the Seoul Central District Court on Saturday morning. The former official is accused by the prosecutor of sharing information pertaining to 18-nano DRAM memory chip technology with China's Changxin Memory Technologies Inc (CXMT).

Prosecutors have stated that the potential damage resulting from the technology leak amounts to approximately 2.3 trillion won ($1.8 billion), as reported by the Korea Economic Daily newspaper. The case also implicates numerous individuals associated with Samsung Electronics' suppliers.

The former official is accused by the prosecutor of sharing information pertaining to 18-nano DRAM memory chip technology with China's Changxin Memory Technologies Inc (CXMT).

Samsung, the leading global memory chipmaker, declined to provide comments.

In response to inquiries, CXMT, headquartered in Hefei, released a statement asserting its commitment to respecting intellectual property rights and highlighted its strong mechanism to prevent unauthorized information inflow from employees. However, the company refrained from providing direct comments on the matter.

CXMT, under the ownership of the state-backed parent Innotron Memory Co, holds the position of China's foremost producer of DRAM memory chips.

Reports from local media indicate the accused departed Samsung for CXMT in 2016, though there's no comment from prosecutors or the court regarding his current employment status with CXMT.

Additionally , Another Samsung official, Choi Jinseog, is currently on trial, accused of pilfering company information to aid a client in establishing a chip factory in China. Choi Jinseog denies the charges and is currently out on bail.
