The largest telco in South Korea, SK Telecom, has announced a $100 million investment in American artificial intelligence company Anthropic to support its telecommunications-driven AI business.
With $450 million raised from investors including Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Spark Capital in May, Anthropic, a startup competing with OpenAI in developing AI foundation models, is one of the best-funded AI companies.
The two businesses intend to jointly construct a huge multilingual model focused on global telecommunications and build an AI platform, according to SK Telecom, which also made a minor investment in May.
SK Telecom chose not to disclose the extent of either its share in Anthropic or the amount it invested in May. In 2021, former leaders of OpenAI launched Anthropic. It is believed that its Claude models pose a significant threat to the OpenAI GPT-4.
To work on the development of telecommunications-driven AI businesses, SK Telecom made the decision to form an alliance with Deutsche Telekom, e&, Singapore Telecommunications, and others in July.
