A mother and daughter from the Caribbean are on the verge of creating history as they secure victory in Virgin Galactic's competition for a space journey. Keisha Schahaff, aged 46, and her 18-year-old daughter, Anastasia Mayers, have been selected to participate in Virgin Galactic's second commercial space mission, Galactic 02, scheduled for Thursday. This achievement marks them as the initial mother-daughter duo to venture into space concurrently, and Mayers will become the second-youngest person ever to embark on an extraterrestrial journey. Moreover, the pair will etch their names in history as the Caribbean's inaugural astronauts.
Embarking on their practical training in New Mexico recently, this mother and daughter have an unconventional journey to their upcoming commercial spaceflight. Their path was paved by their victory in an Omaze competition, which successfully collected more than $1.7 million in grants for the nonprofit organization, Space for Humanity. This organization's mission is to facilitate broader access to space experiences for people worldwide. Schahaff's involvement in the contest took an unexpected twist when she spontaneously entered during a Virgin flight from Antigua to London two years ago. In a surprising turn of events last November, she was astounded to find Richard Branson and a Virgin crew at her doorstep, notifying her that she had emerged victorious in the competition. Former British Olympian Jon Goodwin will join the duo, becoming only the second person ever to journey to space while battling Parkinson's Disease. Schahaff and Mayers have secured tickets worth a substantial $900,000 each.
