A family dispute over the repayment of an iPhone instalment turned into a devastating tragedy in Maharashtra's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, where an 18-year-old boy and his parents died after a tense, nearly three-hour standoff at a hilltop ended in a fatal fall.

The incident unfolded on Friday at a hill in the Tisgaon area, under the jurisdiction of Waluj MIDC police station. The teenager, identified as Kunal Chandgude, had reportedly gone to the hill after an argument with his father over money needed to pay the instalments for an iPhone he had recently purchased. What began as a family disagreement soon escalated into a desperate attempt by his parents, villagers and police personnel to persuade him to move away from the edge.

The teenager remained at the spot for hours despite repeated appeals. His mother, Sangeeta, pleaded with him to reconsider, while his father, Murlidhar, eventually moved closer in an attempt to bring him back to safety. The intervention ended tragically, with the father and son falling from the hill. The mother fell moments later after witnessing what had happened. All three died at the scene.

Maharashtra Hill Horror: How the Tragedy Unfolded

According to officials, Kunal had purchased an iPhone but subsequently faced difficulty keeping up with the instalments. He had reportedly been asking his family for money to meet the latest payment, leading to a heated argument with his father.

Following the argument, Kunal left home and reached the hill at around 10 am. Once there, he began threatening to take his own life, prompting people in the area to intervene.

His parents soon arrived, followed by police and fire department personnel. Villagers and other people at the site also attempted to reason with him. The efforts continued for close to three hours, but Kunal remained unwilling to leave the dangerous spot.

Eyewitness accounts describe repeated efforts to persuade the teenager to think about his future and his family. At one point, people reportedly tried to convince him that the financial problem could be resolved and even offered assurances regarding the phone.

But Kunal continued to insist that he did not see a way forward.

The situation became increasingly tense during the final stage of the standoff. His father, who had initially tried to reason with him from a safer position, eventually climbed closer to his son. At around 1 pm, he attempted to pull Kunal away from the edge.

The two lost their balance and fell. Sangeeta, who witnessed her husband and son fall, followed moments later. Police recovered the bodies and sent them for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered and further legal proceedings are underway.

Mother Spent Hours Trying to Save Her Son

The tragedy has become even more distressing after a video from the scene emerged, showing Sangeeta's repeated attempts to prevent her son from harming himself.

In the footage, she can be seen sitting close to him and pleading with him to come back. At one point, she reportedly moved towards him and extended her hand, apparently hoping he would allow her to lead him away from the edge.

When approaching him appeared to make the situation more precarious, she moved back. The video captures the anguish of a mother trying different ways to reach a distressed child while those around her attempted to help.

Officials said Sangeeta repeatedly assured Kunal that his problems could be resolved and that the family would help him. Yet the teenager remained unmoved.

In one of the most heartbreaking moments described from the incident, Kunal reportedly told his mother that nobody listened to him and that he believed there was no solution to his problems.

The video also shows the mother appearing to move towards another edge of the hill, seemingly in an attempt to communicate the seriousness of the situation to her son. People nearby intervened and pulled her back.

For nearly three hours, the family remained locked in an ordeal that no parent would expect to face. The presence of police officers, villagers and others did not succeed in bringing the teenager away from danger.

What Led to the Family's Desperate Situation?

The immediate trigger identified by officials was the dispute over the iPhone's EMI payments. Kunal had reportedly purchased the phone and subsequently struggled to arrange money for the instalments.

The disagreement with his father over the latest payment appears to have preceded his decision to leave home and go to the hill. However, officials have not established that the financial dispute alone explains the teenager's state of mind.

Importantly, authorities have not confirmed whether Kunal had been dealing with depression or another mental-health condition. Earlier reports had raised questions about his mental health, but officials said further details about the family dispute and his psychological state were still unclear.

That distinction matters. A single argument, a purchase or an unpaid instalment cannot by itself explain a person's suicidal crisis. The incident instead highlights how an apparently ordinary financial or family disagreement can become dangerously serious when someone is already experiencing intense emotional distress.

A Family's Final Hours Were Witnessed by Strangers

The incident drew a crowd of villagers and tourists, some of whom recorded portions of the ordeal on their phones.

Several people tried to speak to Kunal and convince him to step away from the edge. One eyewitness recalled that people urged him to consider his parents, his education and the future ahead of him. Police personnel were also present and attempted to persuade him to move to safety.

Yet the prolonged nature of the standoff also raises questions about whether additional emergency measures could have been deployed sooner. One account noted that police and fire department personnel were at the location, while questions remained over why a safety net or another physical protective measure could not be arranged.

Those questions are likely to form part of the broader scrutiny surrounding the incident.

The Family Had Recently Moved to the Area

The tragedy has also left neighbours struggling to understand what happened.

The family had reportedly moved to the Ekdant Nagar area of Zhalta village only around four months earlier. Neighbours said the three largely kept to themselves and did not interact extensively with people in the locality.

They were, however, said to be deeply attached to their pet dog.

After the deaths, the dog remained at the family's home, reportedly waiting for the family to return. The detail has added another painful dimension to a tragedy that unfolded within a matter of hours.

More Than an iPhone EMI Dispute

The Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar incident is likely to be remembered for the startling connection between a consumer purchase and the deaths of three members of one family. But reducing the tragedy to an "iPhone dispute" risks overlooking the deeper emotional crisis that preceded it.

The phone and its instalments may have been the immediate point of conflict, but the teenager's reported statements suggested a much broader sense of hopelessness. His family's efforts to convince him that the financial problem could be solved were unable to break through that despair.

For families, the incident is a reminder that sudden statements about wanting to die or an extreme reaction to a seemingly manageable problem should never be dismissed as anger, attention-seeking or a passing phase.

The tragedy in Maharashtra also demonstrates the importance of having trained crisis-response mechanisms at locations where a person is in immediate danger. Family members may instinctively try to intervene physically, but doing so can place multiple lives at risk.

The deaths of Kunal, his father Murlidhar and his mother Sangeeta have therefore left behind questions that extend beyond one family's financial dispute: how quickly can emergency responders secure a person in crisis, how should families respond when someone expresses suicidal intent, and what systems can prevent a moment of acute distress from becoming irreversible?

For now, the investigation into the incident continues. But behind the official inquiry is the devastating reality of a family that arrived at a Maharashtra hill hoping to bring their son home—and never returned.
