For the first time in history, a female crocodile has been identified to be pregnant without a male crocodile intervention. This reptile is found in a captive American-origin crocodile, at Costa Rica Zoo.
A research team which includes scientists from Virginia Polytechnic Institute have reported that the fetus is almost 100% similar to the mother's gene and not any paternal gene. While a few other species of reptiles and aves have been reported to give birth to young ones in this manner, it is still seen as the first time a crocodile reproduces this way.
The last reported study on such births had been done on a female crocodile, which unfortunately gave birth to a fully developed but stillborn crocodile. This incident has got the zoologist and scientists out of whack.
