Robot elephant to perform religious rituals in Kerala: when science meets religion

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a group that strives to prevent animal cruelty in the nation, and Indian actress Parvathy Thiruvothu, who has acted in regional Malayalam and Tamil films, have teamed together to help the Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur in this endeavour.

According to a statement from PETA, "this will assist in holding rituals at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free way, encourage the rehabilitation of real elephants and their life in forests, and put an end to the nightmare of captivity for them.

It went on to say that it was inhumane to subject living elephants to the temple's unbearable noise since it would harm and disturb the animals.

"We are extremely happy and grateful to receive this mechanical elephant, which will help us to conduct our rituals and festivals in a cruelty-free manner," the temple's head priest, Rajkumar Namboothiri, told the local media. "We hope that other temples will also consider replacing live elephants for rituals."
