In a groundbreaking moment for space tourism and gender representation in aerospace, pop sensation Katy Perry and Lauren Sánchez, journalist and fiancée of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, are set to launch into space aboard a Blue Origin rocket. They will be part of the first all-female space crew in over six decades, marking a significant milestone in commercial space travel.
The mission, dubbed NS-31, is scheduled for liftoff on Monday at 8:30 am local time from Blue Origin’s Texas launch site. The brief yet historic journey will be the latest flight in Blue Origin’s New Shepard suborbital program, designed to "create a lasting impact that will inspire generations."
The All-Female Crew: A Diverse Group of Trailblazers
This mission features a six-member all-woman crew, representing various fields and accomplishments:
-
Katy Perry: International pop star and one of the best-selling music artists of all time, who has dreamed of going to space for nearly 20 years.
-
Lauren Sánchez: Author, journalist, and Bezos’s fiancée, who is also leading the mission.
-
Gayle King: Renowned journalist and TV host, known for her work on US breakfast television.
-
Amanda Nguyen: Civil rights advocate and Nobel Peace Prize nominee.
-
Kerianne Flynn: Acclaimed film producer.
-
Aisha Bowe: Entrepreneur and former NASA rocket scientist.
The mission echoes the legacy of Valentina Tereshkova, the first and only woman to embark on a solo spaceflight in 1963. This marks the first all-woman space mission since that Soviet milestone.

Mission Details: Journey to the Edge of Space
The six women will be launched aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket, which will climb to an altitude of 100 kilometers (62 miles)—the Kármán line, internationally recognized as the boundary of space. The journey is expected to last approximately 11 minutes, including around four minutes of weightlessness.
Key Mission Highlights:
-
Suborbital flight to the edge of space and back.
-
Large capsule windows will allow panoramic views of Earth and space.
-
A brief experience of zero gravity, enabling the crew to float freely inside the cabin.
-
Return to Earth aided by three parachutes, ensuring a soft and safe landing.
While the crew will technically enter space, they won’t be officially recognized as astronauts by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), NASA, or the US military, all of which have stringent and varying requirements for commercial astronaut status.
The Personal Journeys: From Doubt to Dream Fulfilled
Lauren Sánchez, who played a central role in organizing the mission, revealed to Elle magazine that the participants were chosen because they had "proven their ability to inspire others." She also brought a fashion-forward element to the voyage by collaborating on custom-designed flight suits by Monse, blending space adventure with high fashion.
Katy Perry expressed her excitement both in interviews and on social media. In an Instagram video, she said:
“I’ve dreamed of going to space for 15 years and tomorrow that dream becomes a reality... I am SO honoured to be alongside 5 other incredible and inspiring women as we become the first ever all-female flight space crew!”
Gayle King, however, admitted her decision to join wasn’t an easy one. In an interview, she shared:
“When I got the call from Lauren and Jeff, my first reaction was a no... I still have a lot of trepidation ahead of the trip.”
The journey also marks a dream come true for Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyen, and Kerianne Flynn, who see the mission as both symbolic and transformative.
Blue Origin’s Track Record: From Bezos to Shatner
New Shepard, Blue Origin’s fully autonomous reusable suborbital rocket system, has now flown 52 individuals into space. Its maiden crewed flight took place in 2021, with Jeff Bezos himself among the passengers.
In 2022, William Shatner, best known for portraying Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, made headlines as the oldest person to go to space at 90 years old. His emotional response post-flight offered a philosophical take on the journey:
“All I saw was death. I saw a cold, dark, black emptiness… It was among the strongest feelings of grief I have ever encountered.”
A Giant Leap for Representation in Space Tourism
As Blue Origin continues to build momentum in commercial spaceflight, this landmark all-female mission showcases the growing inclusivity and diversity of space exploration. While brief, the journey is poised to leave a lasting cultural and inspirational imprint—especially for women and girls dreaming of the stars.
With fashion, fame, science, activism, and storytelling all on board, NS-31 is not just a flight into space—it's a statement about possibility, progress, and representation in the final frontier.
