Summer 2023 has been a delight for moon enthusiasts, offering a series of four consecutive supermoons.
Among these, the August Super Blue Moon was a rare spectacle.
The grand finale came this weekend with the September Harvest Moon, captivating skywatchers one last time this season.
When the moon is at its closest point to Earth, known as perigee, it can shine up to 30% brighter and appear 14% larger, creating what we call a supermoon.
The September full moon, also known as the Harvest Moon, signifies the start of the Northern Hemisphere's harvest season and marks the fourth supermoon in the series that began in July.
This year has been a boon for supermoon enthusiasts, but they'll have to wait until September 2024 for the next one.
While the size difference may not be apparent to the casual moon observer, keen-eyed stargazers, especially those with binoculars or a telescope, can appreciate the distinction.
The September full moon peaked at 5:57 a.m. EDT on September 29, remaining luminous throughout the night and into Saturday morning.
