Chandrayaan-3: 'India is Almost Ready to go to Moon'; just a few Steps Away From Launch

India’s awaited moon mission, Chandrayaan-3 is close to its launch. ISRO chief S Somnath said that Chandrayaan-3 will be launched by mid-2023, days after ISRO announced the completion of essential tests on it. Chandrayaan-3 marks India’s third mission to the moon.

ISRO chief said that the primary objective of the Chandrayaan-3 mission is going to be a “precise landing”. Chandrayaan-3 is a follow-on mission to Chandrayaan-2 and aims to demonstrate India’s end-to-end capability in safely landing a rover and exploring the lunar surface.

The Chandryaan-3 mission will consist of an orbiter, rover and a landing module, but ISRO is working on reducing the payload in comparison to Chandrayaan-2 as it will load it with very little scientific equipment. The main objective of Chandrayaan-3 is to guide the lander to the moon’s orbit and land it on the moon.  The ISRO chief said that they are working towards building better algorithms, improving failure modes and building new instruments that will ease the landing. ISRO has been working towards landing a rover on the moon from its previous mission Chandrayaan-2.

“Let's hope that this time Chandrayaan-3 will do its right job of landing, and of course, the rover coming out and doing exploration at least on the lunar day on the surface of the moon, which is really going to be very interesting," added the ISRO chief. Chandrayaan-3 will be launched into space using the LVM3 rocket from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The heavy payload rocket was recently deployed successfully by ISRO to transport One Web’s 26 satellites on Sunday, March 26.
