A senior official has stated that it is possible for the centre to create eight new cities in order to lessen the population pressure on the existing urban regions.
The development of new cities was suggested in one of the 15th Finance Commission's findings, according to MB Singh, director of the G20 unit of the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Department.
In advance of the Urban 20 (U20) conference in Indore, Singh spoke with the Press Trust of India. In response to the finance commission's advice, the states submitted plans to the federal government for 26 new cities, and after evaluation, eight new cities are being taken into consideration for growth, he said.
According to him, the centre would soon reveal the sites and delivery dates for the new towns.
The existing cities in the country cannot accommodate the needs of the inhabitants, thus new ones must be constructed. According to Singh, unplanned expansion in these cities' peripheries is having an effect on their core planning.
A new city's development will boost social and economic activity throughout at least a 200-kilometre radius, he stated.
The union government will play a significant role, he said, although a financial blueprint for the creation of additional cities has not yet been finalised.
