A man was detained by Mumbai Police on Monday for allegedly taking part in a death threat against Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party.
Sagar Barve, the accused man, appeared before the Esplanade court, which ordered him to remain in police detention until June 13.
"The Mumbai Crime Branch, which was probing the case, brought Barve to Mumbai. He was presented in court and has been remanded in police custody till Tuesday," the official said.
According to a Mumbai Police spokesperson, the accused is employed by a private company in the data feeding and analytics division.
A member of the criminal branch reported, "We had received two social media posts; one of them was posted by Barve on Facebook. An inquiry into the threat posted on Twitter is still on." Barve allegedly threatened Pawar by writing on Facebook: "He (Pawar) will meet the same fate as (Narendra) Dabholkar soon."
Sharad Pawar allegedly received death threats from Barve on Facebook. Police claim that he used two fictitious accounts to publish the threats.
Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, had ordered the police to increase protection for the former CM in response to the claimed threats.
Despite their ideological disagreements, Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister, has also stated that threatening a senior opposition leader will not be permitted.
