Vygr Maharashtra: BMC to reconstruct Bandra skywalk at a cost of 83 Crore

Bandra city’s first ever skywalk, built by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) in 2008, has been closed for the last four years. Now BMC has reopened the project and its work will start soon. The estimated amount for the reconstruction of BMC skywalk is Rs. 83 Crore. Earlier in 2021, when BMC was about to rebuild it, the total budget was between 16-19 Crores. After 2 years, there is sudden inflation in the budget.

After an audit conducted by VJTI, it suggested some repairs to the skywalk. Those repairs could be done in small amounts but BMC took the decision to demolish it and rebuild the new one. Regarding this whole scenario, people have so many questions. First of all, citizens are asking about the need to demolish the existing one and build a new one. Some citizens also asked about the 4 times extra budget for the work.

Answering all questions of citizens, the Additional Commissioner of BMC said, “We are extending the skywalk. Earlier, it was up to the family court. Now we are constructing it from Bandra Railway station to MHADA. Also, increasing the width of the skywalk, it will be 6.5 meters. Additional cost of roofing metal and escalators is also included in the tender.”
