Vygr Karnataka: Anti-conversation law to be repealed

One of the most heated laws enacted under the previous BJP administration was the State's Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022, also known as the anti-conversion law, which has now been announced to be repealed by the Karnataka Congress government. The State Cabinet also reached the decision on Thursday to undo the revisions made in the Kannada and Social Studies school textbooks last year, including the addition of lectures on Hindutva ideologues.

The State's Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, whose validity has been questioned in court, was decided to be repealed at the second full-fledged Cabinet meeting convened after the Congress gained power last month. The Agriculture Produce Marketing Act modifications made by the BJP government in 2020 were also agreed to be revoked.

After the Cabinet meeting, minister for Law and parliamentary affairs, HK Patil announced that both repeal bills will be tested during the Assembly's Budget session, which would begin on July 3.

“We have discussed the provisions of the anti-conversion act and it has been decided to repeal the law they (the BJP government) introduced. We will take up the matter during the assembly session, which will be held from July 3,” Patil added.
