Vygr Goa: No new construction licenses until new MRF (Material Recovery Facility) is set up

As Arambol lacks a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for waste management, the High Court of Bombay at Goa on Monday ordered the village panchayat (VP) to stop issuing new development permits.

The sarpanch of Arambol was also ordered by the top court to deposit $50,000.

It should be mentioned that the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) previously testified before the high court that the panchayat of the hamlet of Arambol was disposing of non-biodegradable waste in an open area.

The high court had ordered the panchayat's sarpanch/secretary to show up in court on June 19 either personally or through their authorized counsel after taking cognizance of the submission.

During a previous hearing, a lawyer for the GSPCB had cited evidence that appeared to show the village panchayat of Arambol had dumped non-biodegradable rubbish in the open and outside of designated places.

The high court had ordered the GSPCB to visit the locations right away and make sure the panchayat ceased the dangerous practice. The court had also ordered the GSPCB to notify the village panchayat of Arambol right away so that the inspection's sarpanch, secretary, and other officials could be available.

In the meantime, the failure to establish an MRF facility in the village panchayat has been brought up by the high court, which has ordered the sarpanch and secretary of Aldona panchayat to be present in court on July 3.
