The Goa Revolution Day falls on June 18, making it a significant day for Goans. Goa Revolution Day, popularly known as "Kranti Din," commemorates the beginning of Goa's liberation from Portuguese rule. On June 18, 1946, Dr. Julio Menezes and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia decided to fight against Portuguese repression and for an independent Goa.
Lohia and Menezes spearheaded the effort to help Goans live better lives, have better futures, and be liberated from oppression. Since Goa was liberated on June 18, it is celebrated as Kranti Din.
The people of Goa commemorate their freedom heroes and the liberation battle on this day.
The day celebrates the anniversary of the famous demonstration against the repressive policies of the Portuguese colonial authority that took place in 1946. Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, an Indian freedom fighter who advocated for a peaceful protest against the Portuguese government, led the demonstration.
The Goans participate in a variety of events and activities, including marches, marches, parades, and parties. The people honor the liberation fighters who gave their lives to uphold Goa's independence through these events.
India successfully carried out a military operation to free Goa from Portuguese domination in 1961.
The Portuguese police started shooting at the nonviolent protesters during it. The incident resulted in the deaths of several persons and the injury of numerous others.
The government sponsors a variety of cultural events to honor the independence warriors.
Remembering the history of this day, Goa's Raj Bhavan website states, "The evening of 18th June 1946 at Margao is an unforgettable day in the history of Goa’s Freedom struggle. It is on this evening that Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia a great nationalist and valiant Freedom Fighter against British Rule arrived in Margao and defied the Portuguese regime to make a speech that electrified and galvanized the masses to aggressively fight for their freedom from a very repressive Portuguese colonial rule. Dr. Lohia had come to take a rest in Goa in the Assolna home of Dr. Julias Menezes who was his friend. However, the moment he arrived in Goa, he became restless when he heard about the oppressive rule of the Portuguese regime and the denial of basic civil rights to the people of Goa. Thus began a new defining phase of Goa’s freedom struggle that ended with the liberation of Goa, 15 years later on 19-12-1961."
