The Geological Survey of India (GSI) denied media allegations that huge lithium deposits had been found in Rajasthan, calling them "baseless" and rejecting the claims made in the media reports.
The survey group called the stories "baseless" that claimed a fresh lithium reserve had been found that could supply 80% of India's electricity needs.
The Geological Survey of India found significant lithium deposits in the Degana area of Rajasthan's Nagaur district, according to allegations that have been published in several newspapers, however, it is said that such assertions are "completely baseless and misleading."
The survey organization further stated that such details were not given to the GSI's higher officials by either the regional or central headquarters.
The GSI also emphasized that it is conducting exploration in the Degana region of Nagour, Rajasthan, for the mineralization of tungsten, lithium, and related rare metals. The exploratory project has been operational since 2019–20, and drilling is currently taking place. The amount of these metals existing in that location will be known only once the drilling job is completed and the report is finalized.
Located in Nagaur's Degana, the lithium resource "is more than Jammu and Kashmir," said Pramod Bhaya, reported IE.
5.9 million tonnes of lithium deposits were discovered in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this year. Rechargeable batteries for smartphones, laptops, and electric cars mostly rely on lithium. The discovery of a lithium reserve in J&K may represent a significant step forward for India's pursuit of sustainability.
