On Sunday, a rainstorm hit the Malwa area of Madhya Pradesh, causing six out of the seven Saptarshi sculptures that were built at the "Mahakal Lok" corridor in Ujjain to fall. There were said to be three injuries and at least two fatalities. Although there were damages to two of the statues, no injuries have been mentioned as of yet.
On October 11, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the 'Mahakal Lok' corridor project, which cost Rs 856 crore. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led BJP administration was accused of corruption in the development of the corridor, and the state Congress leadership has questioned the cause of the collapse and called for an investigation.
To uncover the reasons for statues collapsing within a year of their unveiling, the opposition party has assembled a seven-member group of top party leaders. To evaluate the harm done by thunderstorms and high-speed winds along the "Mahakal Lok" corridor in Ujjain, the Congress has constituted a committee consisting of five MLAs and two representatives from the state media and communication department.
After examining the situation with the Ujjain District Collector, Chief Minister Chouhan, who was in New Delhi for the opening of the new Parliament building, responded to the accusations made by the Congress by saying that two statues had been completely damaged after falling to the ground as a result of high-speed winds. He promised to replace all six of the "Saptarshis" statues that had fallen to the ground and accused the Congress of using the situation to advance its political agenda.
The 900-metre-long "Mahakal Lok" corridor, one of the biggest of its kind in the nation, is surrounded by the old Rudrasagar Lake, which has also been revitalised as part of the reconstruction project surrounding the well-known Mahakaleshwar temple.
