Bhopal, June 2: In a significant development in the alleged dowry death case of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, a special CBI court in Bhopal on Tuesday sent her husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law, retired district judge Giribala Singh, to 14 days of judicial custody after the expiry of their five-day CBI remand. The accused will remain in custody until June 16 as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) continues its probe into the high-profile case.
The court proceedings, however, were overshadowed by dramatic scenes and heated exchanges that nearly escalated into a physical confrontation between lawyers representing opposing sides in the case. The tense atmosphere reflected the growing public attention and emotional intensity surrounding the investigation into Twisha Sharma’s death.
Courtroom Tensions Escalate
According to reports, Tuesday’s hearing witnessed unprecedented chaos inside the courtroom. Tempers flared during arguments, leading to sharp verbal exchanges between legal representatives of the accused and the victim's family. The situation reportedly became so volatile that court officials and others present had to intervene to prevent the confrontation from turning physical.
Adding to the controversy, Giribala Singh alleged that a lawyer associated with Twisha Sharma’s side had assaulted her son Samarth Singh during the court proceedings. The allegation has introduced another layer of dispute in an already contentious case.
Judicial Custody After Five-Day CBI Remand
The judicial custody order came after the completion of a five-day CBI remand granted by the same court last week. During the remand period, investigators interrogated both accused extensively and carried out multiple investigative exercises aimed at verifying their version of events surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death.
The CBI had obtained custody of Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh following their arrests in the case. Giribala Singh’s arrest came shortly after the Madhya Pradesh High Court quashed her anticipatory bail, paving the way for the agency to take her into custody.
CBI Recreates Scene of Death
One of the most significant developments during the remand period was a detailed crime-scene reconstruction conducted by the CBI at the Singh family residence in Bhopal.
Investigators used an approximately 80-kilogram dummy filled with sand and weighted with iron dumbbells to replicate the body weight and balance of Twisha Sharma. The reenactment lasted nearly two hours and was conducted to test claims made by Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh regarding how they allegedly brought Twisha’s body down after discovering her hanging.
The reconstruction exercise was intended to determine whether the accused's account was physically possible and whether it matched evidence collected during the investigation. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in the next stages of the CBI probe.
Case That Triggered National Attention
Twisha Sharma, a Noida resident, was found dead on May 12 at her matrimonial home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area, just months after her marriage to Samarth Singh in December 2025. Sharma, an MBA graduate who had previously worked in Delhi, had reportedly met Samarth through a dating application before their marriage.
Her death sparked widespread outrage after family members alleged dowry harassment and accused her husband and in-laws of being responsible. Questions were also raised regarding the initial investigation, post-mortem procedures, and the handling of evidence, prompting judicial scrutiny and eventually a CBI investigation.
The matter became so prominent that the Supreme Court took cognizance of the case. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant subsequently listed the matter for hearing, further intensifying public focus on the investigation.
Security Concerns Over Former Judge’s Incarceration
Authorities are also reportedly evaluating security arrangements related to Giribala Singh’s incarceration. As a retired judicial officer who presided over numerous cases during her career, concerns have emerged regarding her safety inside a regular prison environment.
Officials are examining whether special measures may be required due to the possibility that some inmates could have prior grievances stemming from judgments delivered during her tenure as a judge.
Family Continues Demand for Justice
Meanwhile, Twisha Sharma’s family has maintained that her death was not a suicide and has consistently demanded strict action against those responsible.
Her father has publicly stated that his daughter was strong-willed and unlikely to take her own life. He has expressed confidence in the CBI investigation and urged authorities to ensure that all those found responsible are brought to justice.
The family’s campaign for justice has received significant public support, with protests, social media campaigns, and continuous media attention keeping the case in the national spotlight.
Investigation Continues
With Samarth Singh and Giribala Singh now in judicial custody, investigators are expected to analyze evidence gathered during the remand period, including statements, forensic findings, and results from the crime-scene reconstruction.
The CBI is continuing to examine allegations of dowry harassment, possible evidence tampering, and inconsistencies in accounts provided by individuals connected to the case. Several unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances of Twisha Sharma’s death remain at the center of the investigation.
As the probe progresses, the case remains one of the most closely watched criminal investigations in the country, raising broader questions about dowry-related deaths, accountability, and the criminal justice system’s handling of sensitive cases involving influential individuals.
