At the age of 64, N. Valarmathi, the recognisable voice of the Indian Space and Research Organisation's (ISRO) rocket launch countdowns, passed away. In Chennai on Saturday night, she passed away after having a heart attack. Valarmathi was well-known for her participation in many ISRO missions and served as the project director of RISAT-1, India's first homegrown radar imaging satellite.
She was honoured in 2015 as the first recipient of the APJ Abdul Kalam Award, which bears his name. Social media users paid tribute to Valarmathi and praised her as an inspiration. Many of them expressed their regret over her passing. Also expressing his sympathy was Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. In her final task, Valarmathi announced the countdown to the Chandrayaan-3 moon mission's launch. Many were surprised by her untimely death, despite the fact that her absence during the recent Aditya-L1 launch had been observed. Future ISRO missions won't have her voice, but we'll remember the contributions she made to the field.
