Repolling in 697 booths, 20 dead in WB panchayat elections

After Saturday's panchayat elections were hampered by violence and resulted in at least 20 deaths, repolling for the West Bengal panchayat elections began in 697 booths on Monday, July 10. Rajiva Sinha, the state election commissioner, arrived at the SEC office on Monday and stated that the repoll was "so far, repoll is being held peacefully."

According to Sinha, the voting is taking place with the presence of central forces and is scheduled to last till 5 p.m.

During voting, on Saturday, reports of door-to-door intimidation, blocking opposition candidates and voters, blockading communities, missing opposition agents, and crude bomb explosions were reported. According to officials, the SEC examined reports provided by the district authorities before opting for repolling. 

Repolling is being held in 175 booths in Murshidabad district (the highest number of violent incidents are being reported) along with 18 other districts.
