7 people died in a tragedy that happened in Tripura’s Unakoti district on 28 June, Wednesday. Lord Jagannath Rath from Ulta Rath Yatra came in contact with high tension wire, resulting in the death of 7 people, including 2 minor and serious injuries to 16 people.
Thousands of people were part of Ulta Rath Yatra. They were pulling that heavy iron-made chariot. Chariot was taking turn on the way to Kumarghat when it came in contact with a 133 KV wire. The electric current was so major that 3 women, 2 children and a man caught fire and died on the spot, while 16 others sustained serious injuries. One died on the way to hospital. The injured were taken to GB hospital, Agartala. Remaining injured people are in district hospitals at Unakoti, Kumarghat and Fatikroy.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha met all the victims and families of deceased people. He promised to provide amounts as ex-gratia to all the victims. He announced Rs.4 lakh for families of deceased, 2.5 lakh for people who sustained serious injuries and 74,000 for the others injured. This is an additional amount to ex-gratia announced by PM Modi from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. He did take note of this mishap and expressed his condolences.

While opposition minister Aminesh Debbarma, blamed local administration for their incapability to regulate the Rath Yatra.
Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath ordered a district magistrate level inquiry into the accident. He asked State Electricity Corporation Ltd to submit the report immediately. A detailed inquiry will take place soon.
