PM launches Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana, providing rooftop solar to 10 million houses

Narendra Modi's Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana (PSY) aims to install solar power systems on 10 million Indian roofs. The Prime Minister said the plan would lower electricity prices for low- and middle-income people and boost India's energy independence. After advocating for a nationwide solar panel incentive, Modi made the announcement. Top PM and MNRE officials attended.

Solar Photovoltaic Panels

Installing solar photovoltaic panels on a building or home's roof allows for rooftop solar systems to consume less grid-connected electricity by connecting to the main supply unit. Customers benefit by paying less for power as a result. Depending on the size, capacity, and design of the panels and battery, installing a rooftop solar system can be expensive.

The National Rooftop Scheme

The National Rooftop Scheme currently provides 40% of the capital cost of a solar rooftop project in the form of financial assistance from the government. Unauthorised vendors have, nevertheless, posed as approved by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in fraud cases. Government notices stating that no vendor had been authorised have been issued recently to address this issue.

Additionally, in an effort to meet its green energy targets, the government is refocusing on decentralised solar power. To increase its reach and address inefficiencies, it intends to turn the scheme over to REC Limited, a well-known power sector financier. REC has served as the lead organisation for a number of energy access programmemes in the past, including the PM-SAUBHAGYA programme and rural electrification.

Installed later than ground-mounted solar power projects, rooftop solar power systems have lagged behind. The installed solar power generation capacity in India is currently 73 gigawatts (Gw), of which 56.9 Gw are from ground-mounted projects, 11 Gw are from grid-connected rooftop solar, and 2.75 Gw are from off-grid solar.

India hopes to accelerate the adoption of rooftop solar power systems with the introduction of the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana. In order to meet its green energy targets, cut electricity costs, and achieve energy self-sufficiency in India, the government is pushing for decentralised solar power and offering financial support.
