The Delhi Police maintained a strict vigil on New Year's Eve to ensure law and order and smooth traffic in the city. More than 4,200 challans were issued to those involved in drunk driving, speeding, jumping red lights, and other offenses.
Over 10,000 personnel, including traffic units, were deployed to maintain law and order on the roads. Heavy traffic congestion was witnessed in various areas, and extra force was deployed to control traffic. The number of cases of drunk driving and general traffic violations has almost doubled compared to previous years.
Offenders were booked for improper parking, wrong-side driving, and not wearing seat belts. Most offenders were caught in Sangam Vihar, Lajpat Nagar, Badarpur, Kalkaji, Parliament, and Sarita Vihar areas. Special teams were specifically tasked with detecting cases of drinking and driving during the festivities.
There was an eight-fold increase in the number of traffic challans compared to previous years, with Southeast Delhi having the highest number of cases. This increase was attributed to active patrolling and picketing throughout the year.
Overall, the Delhi Police's efforts to maintain law and order and ensure road safety during New Year's Eve were commendable.
