According to a report, Mumbai has secured the top spot as the costliest city for expatriates in India, with New Delhi and Bengaluru following closely in the second and third positions. Mercer's 2023 Cost of Living survey, encompassing 227 cities across five continents, reveals that Mumbai remains India's priciest city for expatriates, securing the top spot within the country. Globally, Mumbai is ranked at 147. Meanwhile, Hong Kong claims the leading position on the global chart. The survey further indicates that New Delhi ranks at 169 globally, Chennai at 184, Bengaluru at 189, Hyderabad at 202, Kolkata at 211, and Pune at 213.
Mercer's Cost of Living survey assesses the relative expenses of over 200 items in each surveyed location, encompassing housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment. The collected data equip employers with essential information to create fair and effective compensation packages for international assignees, facilitating their decision-making process for over 400 assignment destinations globally.
According to the report, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich have been identified as the costliest cities for international employees worldwide this year. On the other hand, Havana experienced a significant drop in ranking, primarily attributed to currency devaluations in the previous year, making it one of the least expensive locations. Additionally, two cities in Pakistan, Karachi and Islamabad, also ranked among the least expensive. Among the Indian cities included in the survey, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, and Pune offer accommodation costs that are more than 50 percent lower than Mumbai.
