Mumbai: College student fights back against offender, gets him arrested

A 20-year-old college girl bravely resisted her attacker and forced him to flee after she was allegedly sexually attacked on a moving suburban train in Mumbai, according to police.

They claimed that the offender, a 40-year-old laborer from Kisanganj, Bihar, named Nawaju Karim Shaikh, was apprehended within four hours of the incident being reported as a crime on the Central Railway's Harbour Line route on Wednesday morning.

He's been charged with rape.

The unfortunate incident sparked a strong response from the opposition in Maharashtra, with NCP leader Ajit Pawar voicing his rage and calling for the offender to get immediate punishment.

An official reported that the event happened at around 7:30 in the morning between the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid railway stations when the victim, a Girgaon native of Mumbai, was traveling to her college in Navi Mumbai to take her exams.

When the accused entered the bogie as soon as the train departed CSMT station, the victim was alone in a ladies' compartment of the Panvel-bound train, he claimed.

After spotting the student alone in the compartment, the accused targeted her and began harassing her sexually; however, the victim fought back and yelled for help. She bravely fought her attacker in an effort to escape his grasp, he claimed.

After filing a complaint at the CSMT Railway Police Station, the victim was charged with rape in accordance with section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
