On Monday, a disturbing report detailing the hacking of Indian individuals' data, including that of prominent political figures, surfaced. According to the article, Telegram has access to the personal data of all Indian individuals who enrolled themselves on the CoWIN portal, which is a government-run Covid vaccination gateway. The Fourth News reported that the messaging app Telegram has access to the private records of Indian people, including their PAN card and Aadhaar card numbers.
According to the study, the Telegram bot publishes the ID card number, gender, birth year, name of the vaccination center, and the individual's doses when a mobile phone enrolled with the CoWIN portal is entered.
The creators of the Telegram bot that disclosed private data from the compromised Co-WIN database have been removed in the most recent version. After Manorama published the news, the bot's creators took action. Officials informed Hindustan Times, a sister publication of Livemint, that anytime a report of this nature is released, a full audit is carried out to examine database access.
Another development is that the Centre has addressed the news story. Government officials told CNBC TV-18, they have found "discrepancies in data leak of the screenshots of the CoWIN app".
The CoWIN app was not hacked, according to government sources who spoke to CNBC TV-18, although they did add that they are looking into if there has been any unauthorized access to the CoWIN app.
