NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), the commercial arm of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has said that it will employ SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket for one of its mission flights later this year.
This year's second quarter is set aside for the mission, known as GSAT-20, which will mark the first time ISRO launches a satellite using a SpaceX rocket. NSIL shared the news through an official press release on Elon Musk's X (previously Twitter) social media platform.
With the goal of addressing India's communication demands, ISRO's second "demand-driven satellite mission" is called GSAT-20. According to a launch service agreement, NSIL will launch the satellite on board the Falcon 9 and release it through ISRO. GSAT-24, NSIL's inaugural demand-driven mission, was launched in June 2022.
With the GSAT-20 satellite mission, NSIL hopes to supply reasonably priced Ka-band HTS capacity in 2024, primarily for broadband, cellular backhaul, and IFMC applications. Considered the first orbital-class reusable rocket in history, the Falcon 9 rocket has completed numerous launches, re-entry missions, and landings.Although the collaboration between SpaceX and ISRO has potential for the future, experts advise ISRO to build rockets that can launch larger satellites into orbit.
