The Kattupalli Shipyard of Larsen and Toubro, which is located near Chennai, has been approved for the Master Shipyard Repair Agreement (MSRA), and the Indian conglomerate has secured a contract for ship repairs with the US Navy.
The Indian Navy and Coast Guard have given the shipyard its approval for repair work.
Kattupalli Shipyard is a key node in the Southern Defence Corridor, according to a press release. The Military Sealift Command warships of the US Navy have been undertaking voyage repairs there.
According to the statement, the Kattupalli shipyard is equipped with a large ship-lift, several dry berths, and wet berths to allow for the simultaneous construction of new ships and the execution of repairs and refits.
For voyage repairs, the USNS Salvor arrived at Larsen & Toubro's (L&T) Kattupalli Shipyard on Sunday.
Judith Ravin, the US Consul General in Chennai, mentioned, "This MSRA is yet another milestone in our ever-expanding U.S.-India partnership. This historic agreement is a direct outcome of the 2022 U.S.-India 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue and demonstrates U.S. commitment to utilizing repair facilities on a regular basis at the L&T shipyard in Kattupalli. This agreement will serve to strengthen our two nations' strategic partnership and contribute to a free and open Indo-Pacific."
The USNS Salvor serves as a platform to support recovery missions and is a rescue and salvage ship.
The agreement represents yet another development in the expanding partnership between the two major partner nations, particularly in the defense sector.
An Indian multinational company called Larsen & Toubro, worth USD 23 billion, works on engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects among others. It operates internationally in more than 50 countries.
