India will host UNESCO's World Heritage Committee in July 2024

India is all set to chair and host UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee from July 21 to 31 this year in New Delhi, as Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO, Vishal V Sharma told on Tuesday. This is the first time a country will lead and host the committee with New Delhi decided to be the epicentre of global discussions on heritage preservation, the opportunity will be a momentous occasion for India’s cultural and historical legacy. According to an official statement released by UNESCO, “At the 19th extraordinary session (UNESCO, 2023), the World Heritage Committee decided that its 46th session will take place in India.”

 

UNESCO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is dedicated to promoting the world peace and national security through international cooperation in education, arts, science and culture. The UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee meets once a year. It consists of representatives from 21 member states. These members have a significant role in bringing new additions to the prestigious list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Last year, the World Heritage Convention, convened by the 195 States Parties, is set to convene at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from November 22 to 23. 

The United Nations General Assembly declared January 24 as the International Day of Education to recognise the importance of education in promoting peace and development. The sixth International Day of Education will be observed on January 24, 2024, with the theme "learning for lasting peace". The world is experiencing a surge in violent conflicts, as well as an alarming increase in discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech.
