Following an altercation with Delhi police, wrestlers Malik, Phogat, and Punia charged with rioting

The wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, and Bajrang Punia were held on Sunday as they marched to the new Parliament building, and the Delhi Police later arrested them along with their supporters on suspicion of rioting and interfering with the performance of their official duties. 700 people, including 109 protesters in Jantar Mantar, were detained around Delhi, according to the police. Vinesh Phogat responded to the news by claiming that while it took the Delhi Police seven days to file an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, it didn't even take seven hours to arrest people who were protesting "peacefully." Since April 23, the wrestlers have been calling for Singh's arrest for the alleged sexual harassment of seven female wrestlers including minors at Jantar Mantar.

The wrestlers Sakshi Malik, Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sangeeta Phogat, as well as others who took part in the altercation that occurred at Jantar Mantar today with the police, were named in the FIR that was filed at Parliament Street police station under the New Delhi district, according to a senior police officer. The officer explained that the FIR was filed in accordance with sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 186 (obstruction of a public servant in the discharge of public functions), 353, (assault or criminal force to prevent a public servant from performing his duty), and 332, (voluntarily inflicting harm to prevent a public servant from performing his duty).

He said that the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act's Section 3 (mischief causing damage to public property) and Sections 352 (assault or criminal force other than on grave provocation), 147 (rioting), and 149 (unlawful assembly) had also been used. The Delhi Police was criticized by Vinesh Phogat for making an FIR against the demonstrators. "It took seven days for the Delhi Police to submit an FIR against Brij Bhushan, who sexually assaulted (female wrestlers), but it took less than seven hours to file an FIR against us for peacefully protesting. Has a dictatorship started to take hold in our country? How the government manages its players is something that the entire world is interested in.

The winner of the global championship tweeted in Hindi, "A new chapter in history is being written. After a confrontation with security forces who attempted to prevent them from preventing them from marching to the new Parliament building as it was being opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia were among those taken into custody. When Vinesh Phogat, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and her cousin tried to scale the barriers, wrestlers and police officers shoved and pushed each other. As soon as the wrestlers were forced onto buses and sent to various locations, the police officers started taking the wrestlers' possessions from the protest site at Jantar Mantar, including cots, mattresses, coolers, fans, and the tarpaulin roof. A senior officer had earlier stated that all of the female wrestlers who had been held had been freed, and the male wrestlers would follow suit shortly. Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik, though, pledged to keep up their sit-in at Jantar Mantar on Twitter.
