North India is currently experiencing a severe cold wave, with dense fog covering vast areas and no signs of it letting up, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD forecast bulletin states that Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan will continue to face dense fog conditions for the next few days, while Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and other northern states will also witness dense fog conditions for the coming week. The cold wave is expected to continue in some parts of Punjab and Haryana, but may improve in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh after January 4 and 3, respectively.
The cold wave and fog have caused disruptions in train and vehicular traffic, with at least 26 trains delayed in Delhi due to the fog. The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius on January 2, with the maximum temperature reaching 17.2 degrees Celsius. Delhi also experienced chilly winds on January 3, and the Air Quality Index was recorded at 346, indicating a'very bad' category according to the Central Pollution Control Board.
In addition to the cold wave, the IMD has predicted rainfall in certain states. South Tamil Nadu, south Kerala, and Lakshadweep may witness light to moderate showers in the next few days, while Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha might experience light isolated rainfall between January 3 and 8. Meanwhile, Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir, has frozen, and Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.
Overall, North India is currently facing a severe cold wave and dense fog conditions, causing disruptions in transportation and affecting the air quality in Delhi. The IMD has also predicted rainfall in certain states, providing some relief from the cold wave.
