NVIDIA Pledges $100 Billion Investment to Power OpenAI’s AI Expansion

NVIDIA, the global leader in chip manufacturing, has announced a landmark strategic partnership with OpenAI, the company behind the popular AI tool ChatGPT, involving an investment of up to $100 billion. This deal is centered around deploying a massive AI infrastructure, powering at least 10 gigawatts of NVIDIA systems for OpenAI’s next-generation AI data centers. The first phase of this ambitious plan is slated to go live in the second half of 2026, using NVIDIA’s latest Vera Rubin platform.

This investment means NVIDIA will progressively allocate funds to OpenAI as the latter deploys each gigawatt of AI computing capacity. To put it into perspective, 10 gigawatts of power is roughly equivalent to the electricity consumed by over 8 million average U.S. homes. The scale of this infrastructure will involve millions of NVIDIA’s graphics processing units (GPUs) — estimated between 4 to 5 million units — drastically expanding OpenAI’s compute capacity.

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the significance of compute infrastructure as the foundational resource for the future economy. This partnership and the massive investment reflect a shared belief that AI technologies will continue to evolve rapidly and that robust computing power is essential to enabling breakthroughs in AI research, product development, and large-scale user deployment.

From NVIDIA’s perspective, its CEO Jensen Huang described the collaboration as monumental, emphasizing how the two companies have pushed the boundaries of AI for over a decade, from the early DGX supercomputers to ChatGPT’s widespread adoption. Huang underlined that this multi-billion-dollar deal represents the next leap in AI development, aiming to power "the next era of intelligence."

Financially, the structure of this partnership is unique. NVIDIA will invest in OpenAI through non-voting shares, enabling OpenAI to use these funds primarily to purchase NVIDIA chips and systems. This creates a circular financial relationship where NVIDIA supports OpenAI’s growth by providing capital and hardware, while OpenAI commits to buying NVIDIA’s technology to build its data centers.

This deal is also significant within the broader context of the AI industry's rapid expansion. Major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft are also investing heavily in AI data centers, collectively heading towards an estimated $325 billion investment by the end of the year. However, while established firms rely largely on their existing cash reserves, newer companies like OpenAI are seeking massive external funding to scale up their infrastructure.

Experts note this scale of investment raises questions about market dynamics and competition. With NVIDIA and OpenAI so closely linked financially and operationally, there may be concerns about reduced competition in AI hardware supply and software development. Nevertheless, this alliance places both companies at the forefront of the AI landscape, with the combined strength to drive both innovation and adoption.

Overall, this partnership not only signals confidence in the transformative power of AI but also highlights the critical role of computing infrastructure in accelerating AI progress. Industry watchers see it as a pivotal moment that will shape how AI technologies develop and integrate into the economy and society at large in the years to come
