German sports car and luxury SUV manufacturer Porsche has recently revealed its plans to incorporate Google services into its future vehicle generations. This means that Porsche customers will soon be able to enjoy the convenience of Google navigation, speech, and app ecosystem right from their cars. Instead of relying on a Volkswagen Group-specific app store, Porsche has decided to utilize Google Automotive Services as the foundation for its infotainment systems.
This move sets Porsche apart from its parent company, Volkswagen Group, which has been introducing its own app store in some of Audi's models in the US. Hiroshi Lockheimer, the SVP of Platforms and Ecosystems at Google, expressed his excitement about partnering with Porsche to enhance the in-vehicle experiences for their valued customers.
Porsche's partnership with Google will give owners of future vehicles access to a wide range of car-specific apps, instead of being limited to the apps chosen by the Volkswagen Group.
Google Automotive Services (GAS) is different from Android Auto, and it allows carmakers to create their own infotainment systems using Google's platform. Even though Porsche has announced its partnership with Google, it is likely that the company will still offer Android Auto services on top.
According to reports, it seems that Porsche is on track to provide one of the most comprehensive and user-friendly in-car services available. Not only is Porsche among the first automakers to enhance the Apple CarPlay offering with Apple's Automaker Toolkit, but it also plans to begin production of this technology in the near future. It's worth noting that Porsche's upcoming all-electric SUV may also benefit from an infotainment upgrade.
