Ola and Uber Get a New Rival as Green SM Launches Premium EV Taxi Service in India

Vietnamese mobility major Green SM has officially entered the Indian ride-hailing market with the launch of its all-electric taxi service, Green SM Limo, in Delhi-NCR, marking a significant new chapter in India’s rapidly evolving urban mobility landscape. Backed by Vietnamese conglomerate Vingroup and electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast, the company is positioning itself as a premium electric ride-hailing alternative at a time when the market is searching for a strong EV-focused player following the decline of BluSmart Mobility.

The launch, held on June 5 to coincide with World Environment Day, marks Green SM’s entry into one of the world’s largest mobility markets and its fifth international market after Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The company views India as a strategic growth destination and plans to expand its presence beyond Delhi-NCR into other major metropolitan cities in phases.

Premium EV Mobility Aimed at Filling a Market Gap

Green SM’s arrival comes at a time when industry observers believe a gap exists in India’s premium electric cab segment. The collapse of BluSmart left a vacuum in the market for customers seeking a dedicated EV ride-hailing experience, creating an opportunity for a new entrant focused exclusively on electric mobility. Green SM is seeking to capitalize on that opportunity by offering a premium, technology-driven, and environmentally conscious transportation service.

Unlike conventional ride-hailing platforms that rely on a mix of vehicle types, Green SM operates an entirely electric fleet. The company also follows a company-owned fleet model with salaried drivers, differentiating itself from the asset-light approach used by many existing ride-hailing platforms.

Delhi-NCR Launch Begins With Large EV Fleet

In the first phase of operations, Green SM Limo will serve key areas across the National Capital Region (NCR). The company has launched operations with approximately 1,000 electric vehicles and has announced plans to scale up aggressively, targeting a fleet of as many as 10,000 vehicles in the Delhi-NCR region over the coming months.

The phased rollout strategy is designed to help the company expand coverage based on customer demand while maintaining service quality. As operations stabilize in NCR, Green SM intends to enter additional metro markets across India.

This expansion strategy could intensify competition in India’s ride-hailing sector, where established players such as Ola and Uber currently dominate urban mobility services.

VinFast Limo Green Forms the Backbone of Operations

The service is built around the VinFast Limo Green, a seven-seater fully electric MPV developed specifically for mobility and fleet applications. The vehicle is a fleet-focused derivative of VinFast’s MPV platform and has been designed to deliver a premium passenger experience while supporting large-scale commercial operations.

The electric MPV offers three rows of seating and is targeted at customers looking for greater comfort than traditional hatchback- or sedan-based taxi services. According to reports, the vehicle features a spacious cabin, premium styling, and a range of passenger-oriented amenities.

Each vehicle is equipped with complimentary drinking water, wet tissues, and other essential conveniences aimed at improving passenger comfort during journeys.

Industry reports indicate that the Limo Green is expected to be one of VinFast’s key mobility products in India and forms part of the company’s broader strategy to establish an EV ecosystem in the country.

Strong Focus on Passenger Safety

One of Green SM’s central selling points is its emphasis on safety and reliability.

The company says every Green SM Limo vehicle is equipped with a “Secure-to-Safe” system designed to enhance passenger security throughout the ride. The system integrates interior and exterior cameras, AI-assisted monitoring technologies, and emergency support features.

The vehicles also feature dedicated support and emergency buttons, enabling passengers to quickly access assistance if required. Combined with comprehensive camera coverage, these systems are intended to create a safer transportation environment and build trust among users.

Green SM has positioned these features as part of its commitment to delivering modern, secure, and technology-enabled mobility solutions in India.

Promotional Offers to Attract Early Users

To encourage adoption during its launch phase, Green SM has introduced promotional discounts for customers booking rides through its mobile application.

The company is offering a 50% discount on rides, with savings capped at ₹250 per trip, for bookings made between June 5 and June 11. The offer is available through the Green SM app in operational service areas.

The mobile application has already gone live in regions where services have been launched, enabling users to book rides directly through the platform.

The introductory pricing strategy is expected to help Green SM quickly attract users and generate awareness in a market where consumers are already familiar with app-based mobility services.

Backed by Vingroup’s Expanding India Ambitions

Green SM’s India entry is closely linked to the broader ambitions of Vingroup and VinFast in the country.

VinFast formally entered India in 2025 and introduced products such as the VF 6 and VF 7 electric SUVs. The company has repeatedly emphasized its goal of building not just vehicles but an entire EV ecosystem that includes mobility services, charging infrastructure, and sustainable transportation solutions.

To support its long-term plans, VinFast has also established a manufacturing presence in India. The automaker’s facility in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, represents a major investment aimed at local production, exports, and expansion across Asian markets.

Green SM’s launch therefore serves a dual purpose: creating a new mobility business while simultaneously increasing public exposure to VinFast electric vehicles on Indian roads.

High-Profile Launch Event Signals Long-Term Commitment

The official launch ceremony in New Delhi drew representatives from Indian government agencies, the Embassy of Vietnam in India, and strategic partners from sectors including transportation, energy, finance, technology, infrastructure, automotive, and services.

Among the prominent attendees were Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh and Commission for Air Quality Management Vice President Dr. Virinder Sharma. Their presence highlighted the growing importance of clean mobility initiatives and cross-border investment in India’s transportation sector.

The launch on World Environment Day further reinforced Green SM’s sustainability-driven message and its commitment to making cleaner mobility a mainstream transportation option for urban commuters.

A New Challenger in India’s Ride-Hailing Battle

Green SM’s arrival adds a fresh dimension to India’s competitive ride-hailing industry. While Ola and Uber continue to dominate the market, Green SM is betting that a fully electric fleet, premium passenger experience, advanced safety systems, and environmentally friendly operations will help it carve out a distinctive position.

With an initial fleet of around 1,000 EVs, plans to scale to 10,000 vehicles, expansion into multiple metro cities, and backing from the Vingroup-VinFast ecosystem, the company is making one of the most ambitious entries into India’s mobility sector in recent years.

Whether Green SM can successfully challenge entrenched ride-hailing giants remains to be seen, but its launch signals growing international confidence in India’s electric mobility future and highlights the increasing role EV-focused transportation services are expected to play in the country’s urban mobility ecosystem.
