ISRO to test Gaganyaan Mission on Saturday to showcase its human spaceflight capability

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Tuesday posted details about Gaganyaan's Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) on X (formerly Twitter). The test is scheduled for Saturday, October 21 at 8 a.m., and the vehicle will be launched from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. It will be a short-duration mission to demonstrate the performance of the crew escape system. Registration to witness the launch will commence at 6pm on Tuesday.

ISRO's Gaganyaan project aims to demonstrate India's human spaceflight capability by launching a three-member crew to a 400-kilometer orbit and returning them safely to Earth.

According to the ISRO website, the development of the crew module for the Gaganyaan mission is progressing at various stages. For TV-D1, the crew module represents an unpressurized variant.

This module contains all the essential systems for deceleration and recovery, including a comprehensive array of parachutes, recovery assistance actuation systems, and pyrotechnics, as detailed on the website.

ISRO has also indicated that the crew module will be retrieved from the Bay of Bengal after touchdown, using a dedicated vessel and a diving team from the Indian Navy.
