World's priciest whisky 'Macallan 1926' sells for ₹22 Cr at London auction

A recent Sotheby’s auction in London witnessed a record-breaking sale of a rare 1926 Macallan single-malt whiskey, featuring the Valerio Adami label that made history after it was sold for 2.7 million dollars (approximately ₹ 22 Crore).

Well, the same Macallan 1926 bottles had set a previous record in 2019 for the most expensive bottle ever sold when it was able to fetch £1.5 million at the same London auction house.

Sotheby's head of whisky Jonny Fowle told AFP before the sale that he had been allowed to sample the prized whisky according to France24.

"I tasted a tiny drop -- a tiny drop -- of this. It's very rich, it's got a lot of dried fruit as you would expect, a lot of spice, a lot of wood," he told

He also mentioned the rare quality of the whiskey and said that it had spent 60 years in dark European oak, which was reflected in the colour.

"It's not a whisky to take lightly. It's a rich, rich dram, but it is incredible," he further added.

Sotheby’s official Instagram account also featured an image of the exclusive whiskey, with a detailed note.

This auction sale does justice to the popular saying “the older the better” which is often used to describe alcohol as the ageing process improves the flavour, aroma and complexity of the alcohol.

Why does older wine taste better?

Wine tastes better with age because of a complex mix of sugars, acids, and phenolic compounds that react with each other over time to give the wine its pleasing flavour.
