US Blocks UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire, Citing Hostage Concerns

The United States has blocked a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, supported by 14 other council members, failed due to the US veto, which was justified by concerns over hostage release.

Why Did the US Reject the Resolution?

The US explained that it vetoed the resolution because it did not include provisions for the release of hostages held in Gaza. Deputy US Ambassador Robert Wood said, “We could not support an unconditional ceasefire that failed to release the hostages.” Seven Americans are among those being held in Gaza he added, and  emphasized that freeing hostages must be a part of any plan to end the war. Wood also criticized the resolution for failing to condemn Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7.

Global Reaction to the US Veto

The veto has sparked outrage from Palestinian officials and other nations. The Palestinian Authority said the US decision “encourages Israel to continue its attacks on innocent civilians.” France and the UK, who supported the resolution, expressed disappointment. UK Ambassador Barbara Woodward said, “We want this war to end, the suffering in Gaza to stop, and the hostages to be released immediately.”  Rights groups have accused the US of hypocrisy. While blocking calls for a ceasefire, the Biden administration continues to send military aid to Israel, including $14 billion since the conflict began. Activists claim this support worsens the crisis.

The Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The conflict has caused immense suffering, with nearly 44,000 Palestinians killed and countless others affected by the ongoing violence. Gaza is facing severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies, plunging its population into a deep humanitarian crisis. This is the fourth time the US has vetoed a ceasefire resolution on Gaza. Many UNSC members expressed frustration, saying that inaction is costing lives and prolonging the war.
