A sightseeing trip off Vietnam's popular Phu Quoc Island turned into a devastating tragedy after a speedboat carrying Indian tourists capsized just minutes into its return journey, killing 15 people and leaving survivors with haunting memories of the disaster.
The accident, which occurred barely 400-500 metres from the shore near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island, has sent shockwaves across India, particularly in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, where most of the victims hailed from. As rescue operations concluded and authorities began investigating the cause of the accident, emotional accounts from survivors and eyewitnesses have painted a chilling picture of the final moments before the boat overturned.
How the Vietnam boat accident unfolded
According to Vietnamese authorities, the speedboat was carrying 36 people—32 Indian tourists and four crew members—when it capsized off the coast of Phu Quoc, one of Vietnam's most visited tourist destinations.
The group had spent time sightseeing on Hon May Rut Ngoai Island and was returning to An Thoi Port when the vessel overturned unexpectedly in rough sea conditions. Although the boat was close to land, the sudden capsizing trapped several passengers inside while others were thrown into the sea. Nearby boats immediately rushed to the scene to assist in rescue efforts.
By the end of the operation, 21 people had been rescued alive, while 15 Indian tourists lost their lives. Vietnamese authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances leading to the accident, with initial reports pointing to strong waves and rough weather as contributing factors.
Survivor recalls moments of panic
Among the survivors was a tourist from Andhra Pradesh's Guntur district, who recounted the terrifying sequence of events.
He said the passengers were enjoying the scenic surroundings and taking photographs when the boat suddenly tilted. Within seconds, chaos broke out as passengers lost their balance and the vessel overturned.
The survivor recalled that there was hardly any time to react. People screamed for help as many struggled to stay afloat, while others became trapped beneath the overturned boat. Those who managed to escape clung to life jackets or floating debris until rescue boats reached them.
His testimony underscores how quickly a routine sightseeing excursion turned into a life-threatening emergency, leaving survivors traumatised by the loss of fellow travellers.
"Some jumped out, I saw him get stuck"
One of the most heartbreaking accounts came from a friend of a victim, who witnessed the tragedy unfold.
According to him, some passengers instinctively jumped into the water as the boat began tipping over. However, not everyone could escape.
He recalled seeing his friend become trapped inside the vessel as it overturned. Despite desperate attempts to reach him, there was little anyone could do in those crucial moments.
The survivor said the image of his friend trapped inside the boat continues to haunt him. The suddenness of the accident meant that several passengers had no opportunity to free themselves before the vessel flipped completely.
Witnesses also described frantic cries for help echoing across the water as nearby boats raced towards the accident site.
Most victims from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that all 15 deceased were Indian nationals and later released the list of victims.
Of those who died, 10 were from Tamil Nadu and three were from Andhra Pradesh. The remaining victims belonged to Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
The tragedy has deeply affected families across multiple states, many of whom were informed only after authorities completed identification procedures.
Several of the tourists were reportedly associated with an electronics company and had travelled together as part of a group holiday.
Rescue efforts launched immediately
Rescue operations began almost instantly after the boat capsized.
Nearby tourist boats and local fishermen rushed to pull passengers from the water before official emergency teams arrived. Survivors were brought back to shore, where medical personnel treated the injured.
Some of the rescued passengers required hospitalisation, while others were treated for shock and minor injuries.
Indian diplomatic officials remained in constant touch with Vietnamese authorities throughout the rescue operation. The Embassy of India also established emergency support centres in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to assist affected families and coordinate necessary arrangements.
Investigation into the cause
Vietnamese authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary reports suggest rough seas and high waves may have destabilised the speedboat shortly after it departed from the island. Officials are also expected to examine whether all safety protocols were followed, including passenger safety briefings, weather assessments and vessel operation standards.
The Vietnamese Prime Minister has directed authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly and review maritime safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
Growing popularity of Vietnam among Indian tourists
The tragedy has drawn attention to the increasing number of Indian tourists travelling to Vietnam.
Over the past few years, destinations such as Phu Quoc, Da Nang and Hanoi have witnessed a sharp rise in Indian visitors, aided by direct flight connectivity, comparatively affordable travel packages and relaxed visa policies.
Island-hopping tours remain among the most sought-after activities in Phu Quoc, with speedboat excursions operating daily to nearby islands known for their beaches and coral reefs.
While such trips are generally considered safe, the latest accident has once again highlighted the importance of strict adherence to maritime safety regulations, especially during adverse weather conditions.
A holiday that ended in heartbreak
For the families of the victims, what was meant to be a memorable overseas vacation has turned into an unimaginable loss.
Survivors continue to grapple with traumatic memories of watching fellow passengers struggle in the water and become trapped beneath the overturned boat. Their accounts have revealed not only the speed with which the disaster unfolded but also the helplessness experienced by those who could do little more than watch as the tragedy claimed lives.
As investigations continue, Indian and Vietnamese authorities are working together to support bereaved families, facilitate documentation and coordinate the repatriation of the victims.
The Vietnam boat accident stands as one of the deadliest overseas tourist tragedies involving Indian nationals in recent years. While rescue teams managed to save 21 people, the emotional scars carried by survivors and the families of the 15 victims are likely to endure long after the headlines fade.
