The United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), condemned Iran on Thursday for its continued failure to fully cooperate with the agency. This marks the second time in just five months that Iran has faced such criticism.
Call for Answers on Uranium Findings
The IAEA also urged Tehran to provide clarifications in an ongoing investigation regarding uranium particles discovered at two undeclared sites. These sites have not been listed by Iran as nuclear facilities, further raising concerns among international authorities about the transparency of Iran’s nuclear activities.
Voting Outcome
The resolution, which was brought forward by France, Germany, and Britain, with the backing of the United States, passed with 19 votes in favour. However, Russia, China, and Burkina Faso opposed the measure, while 12 members abstained, and one did not participate in the vote. The vote took place behind closed doors, and diplomats revealed the outcome on the condition of anonymity.
Context Amid Rising Tensions
This condemnation comes at a pivotal moment as global tensions surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme intensify, particularly ahead of a potential return of Donald Trump to the White House. Trump’s previous presidency saw strained relations with Iran, especially after his 2018 decision to unilaterally withdraw the United States from the 2015 nuclear agreement and impose stringent sanctions on Iran. These actions were part of Trump’s “maximum pressure” strategy, which significantly impacted Iran's economy.
IAEA Report Raises Alarm
The resolution follows a confidential IAEA report released earlier this week, which highlighted Iran’s defiance of international calls to limit its nuclear programme. According to the report, Iran has expanded its stockpile of uranium enriched to near-weapons-grade levels, further escalating concerns over its nuclear ambitions.
As the international community continues to monitor Iran’s nuclear activities, diplomatic efforts to address these issues remain ongoing.
