Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has been arrested in France for allegedly failing to address illegal content on his app. Additionally, Durov is under investigation for suspected "serious acts of violence" against his young son, according to a source familiar with the case.
Allegations and Background
The inquiry, initiated by the French child welfare office, involves Durov’s son, born in 2017, who currently resides in Switzerland with his mother. The reported incidents of violence are said to have occurred in Paris. Last year, the boy's mother lodged a complaint in Switzerland, accusing Durov of violent behavior toward their child.
Family Details and Legal Proceedings
Durov's former partner, who has three children with him, revealed to AFP that they have two sons and a daughter. The French investigation is intended to coordinate with Swiss authorities to determine if there is a concurrent investigation in Switzerland, aiming to avoid duplication.
The complaint filed in Geneva alleges that Durov, aged 39, and the mother, aged 44, who were never married, have children born in 2013, 2016, and 2017. The complaint accuses Durov of being violent toward their youngest son on multiple occasions between 2021 and 2022, both in Switzerland and elsewhere.
Impact on the Child and Legal Repercussions
Court documents indicate that the alleged violence resulted in the child experiencing anxiety, bed-wetting, and persistent sleep issues. One specific incident reported in November 2021 involved Durov allegedly slapping the child on the back, lifting him off the ground, and shaking him vigorously in Paris.
Public and Legal Responses
The mother’s Geneva-based lawyer, Karim Charaf, mentioned that while he cannot comment on the French investigation, he confirmed that his client took appropriate measures to protect her children's interests in Switzerland. Durov's lawyer has also declined to comment on the matter.
