In the early hours of Sunday, March 10, 2024, the Sri Lanka Navy arrested 15 fishermen close to Neduntheevu on charges of trespassing while fishing.
The boat IND-PY-PK-MM-1380 departed the Karaikal fishing harbour on March 6 at 4 pm, from the department of fisheries in Karaikal. The arrested fishermen were taken to Kankesanthurai Naval base.
Detained Fishermen
The detained fishermen included two from the Karaikal district of Puducherry: P. Sundaramurthy (44) and S. Kandasamy (43)
And 13 were detained from Tamil Nadu district of Nagapattinam: V. Kishore (29), S. Naveen (22), S. Kalidas (34), P. Ananda Pal (50), R. Pulavendiran (42), A. Sriram (24), K. Kaviarasan (34), A. Singaram (33), R. Madan (25), C. Naveen Kumar (18), S. Senthil (35), R. Anburaj (39) and R. Rajkumar (23).
Demands erupts for Center Intervention
Reacting to the arrest, on Sunday, BJP state president K. Annamalai and Tamil Maanila Congress president G.K. Vasan requested the Center's involvement in releasing fishermen from Pudukkottai district who had been detained by the Sri Lankan Navy.

Mr. Vasan, in a statement denouncing the detention, stated that the Center ought to promptly engage in negotiations with the Sri Lankan government and guarantee the release of the detained fishermen as well as the seized boats. Additionally, he demanded the federal government and state governments to intervene and take actions to ensure fishermen's safety.
In the meantime, Annamalai wrote to Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, asking the Ministry to step in and help expedite the inmates' early return home and the release of their fishing boat.
