President Murmu's Visit to Mauritius: Gifts 'RuPay Card' to PM Jugnauth

Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, is currently visiting Mauritius for three days. President Murmu and Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth of Mauritius met on March 11 to talk about strengthening their bilateral ties. 

In a series of posts on X, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) while Sharing a few photographs, stated, "Taking India-Mauritius partnership to new heights! President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn and PM @KumarJugnauth of Mauritius held a tète-à-tète meeting.” "The two leaders took stock of bilateral ties and discussed ways to impart further momentum to the historic & deep-rooted India-Mauritius partnership.”

Prime Minister Jugnauth received a RuPay card from President Murmu as a token of appreciation. On February 12 of this year, RuPay card services were launched in Mauritius.

Additionally, President Murmu had bilateral talks with Prithvirajsing Roopun, the president of the Republic of Mauritius. The official account of the Indian president wrote on X that President Murmu and President Roopun had a warm and cordial meeting at the Presidential State House.

It said, sharing a few photographs of the meeting, "The two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen the unique and multi-faceted bilateral relationship, including through capacity building, science & technology, and collaboration in various developmental projects.”

Ms Murmu is on a three-day state visit to Mauritius, arriving in Port Louis earlier in the day. During her visit, she will serve as the chief guest at the country's National Day celebrations on Tuesday. 

“President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn arrives in Mauritius on a 3-day State Visit,” the official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal wrote in a post on X.

“In a special gesture reflecting the exceptionally close ties between &, PM @KumarJugnauth welcomed President Murmu at the airport with full state honours,” the MEA spokesperson added. 

Sharing photographs on X, the MEA posted, "A solemn homage to the architects of India-Mauritius enduring ties!" "A moment of reverence & remembrance for the two towering figures in Mauritius's history, who strived to deepen the long-standing India-Mauritius friendship," it added.

Visit to Ayurvedic Garden

Murmu also visited the Ayurvedic Garden which was set up at the Presidential State House last year in collaboration with the AYUSH ministry.

"Traditional medicine is an important area of partnership between the two countries," the MEA underlined, sharing some photographs of President Murmu's visit to the Ayurvedic Garden.

The President also paid respects to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Sir Anerood Jugnauth at the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden.

National Day Celebrations in Mauritius

President Murmu will serve as the Chief Guest at Mauritius' National Day celebrations. During these festivities, an Indian Navy contingent, accompanied by two vessels — INS Tir and CGS Sarathi, will also partake.

President Murmu's attendance as the sixth Indian President to grace Mauritius' National Day as Chief Guest since 2000 emphasizes the deep-rooted ties between India and Mauritius. The visit underscores both countries' commitment to bolstering bilateral relations across various sectors and strengthening the close people-to-people connections, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement earlier. 

“A new milestone in India-Mauritius ties! President Droupadi Murmu @rashtrapatibhvn embarks on a State Visit to Mauritius. The President will attend the Mauritius National Day celebrations as the Chief Guest tomorrow,” said Jaiswal in a post on X.

President Murmu’s three-day visit

President Murmu received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Mauritius and paid tribute to Bapu at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius.

Ms. Murmu will also meet with the Chief Justice of the Mauritius Supreme Court, the Speaker of the Mauritius National Assembly, and other prominent Mauritiusans during her three-day visit. 

Together, Ms Murmu and Mr Jugnauth will open 14 projects with support from India, showcasing the wide-ranging and complex features of New Delhi's strong development alliance with Mauritius, which the MEA has identified as a "key pillar" of the two countries' relationship.

Additionally, President Murmu will observe the exchange of significant bilateral agreements aimed at further bolstering the robust institutional collaboration and capacity-building cooperation between the two nations, as highlighted in the MEA release.
