An Azerbaijani aircraft crashed in Kazakhstan on Wednesday. Embraer 190 was flying to the Grozny city in Russia. A passenger on the flight, who was one of the fortunate survivors, recorded the entire footage, showing the frightened people frantically praying before the crash and moments after the incident.
Why Did Embraer 190 Crash?
The Azerbaijani aircraft had passengers belonging to four countries. There were Azerbaijanis, Russians, Kazakh citizens, and Kyrgyz citizens. Beside them, there were five crew members.
Russia’s aviation watchdog said that the event occurred because of an emergency after a bird strike.
The bird strike made the plane change its initial route. Another reason was the serious fog in Grozny. It made the pilots divert from the intended destination and perform an emergency landing.
Commercial aviation-tracking websites showed that the flight was going through the scheduled route but after that, it disappeared. It was then seen on the east coast, near Aktau airport and moments afterward it crashed.
Ilham Aliyev, the President of Azerbaijan said that the aircraft diverted because of the worsening weather conditions and went toward toward Aktau airport. Strong GPS jamming is another cause linked to the event.
Yet another potential cause is the Russian air defence shooting the flight. This speculation from X users considers misunderstanding to be the reason for the crash. They say that the Russian defence shot Embraer 190, thinking it to be a Ukrainian drone.
What Can Be Seen in the Azerbaijan Plan Crash Footage?
The plane crash footage is one of the most chilling footage you can conceive. It shows the cabin and the sounds of the prayer, 'Allahu Akbar' (God is Great), as the steep descent is made.
The video shows yellow masks hanging listlessly over the seats of the people. It also shows people praying and shouting with fear. Someone saying 'wear seatbelt' is also heard background.
Besides the video by the passenger, Russia RT also had the incident covered. It shows the destroyed ceiling panel and air blower of the plane. You can see injured people on the floor, wailing for help. There's a picture of a damaged yellow life jacket and spots of blood on the armrest, which depicts the intensity of the crash and the harrowing experience of those who were within.
To recognize the impact of the crash, the Azerbaijani President declared Thursday as a day for national mourning.
How Is the Event Being Investigated?
According to the Azerbaijani President, the matter is being 'thoroughly investigated.' An investigative team has also flown to Kazakhstan and is trying to determine the reasons for the fated event.
A government commission by the Kazakhstan authorities is set up to examine the cause. It is also taking measures to ensure that the families of the expired victims can access help.
Investigations on the technical problems in the aircraft and the closure of airspace that was nearby is also underway.
Until the investigations end, all Azerbaijan Airlines suspended from Baku to Russia's Chechnya have been suspended.
