A massive tragedy was averted in Punjab on Friday afternoon when a sudden fire engulfed four general coaches of the Amritsar–New Jalpaiguri Karmabhoomi Express near the Sarai Banjara station in the Rajpura-Sirhind section.
The fire originated in an unreserved coach and quickly spread to adjacent bogies, causing severe structural damage to three of them. Thankfully, the train's automated safety system activated and halted the train, allowing passengers to safely evacuate onto the tracks without a single casualty.
Ambala division railway officials prioritized passenger safety, promptly guiding the stranded travelers to a station 500 meters away and arranging an alternative train so they could reach their destinations. Northern Railway has ordered a formal technical probe to investigate whether electrical or mechanical failures caused the blaze.
